Three jobs that come up constantly when you are preparing photos for anything public: making a small image usable at a larger size, cropping to a shape without decapitating the subject, and checking what your photos are quietly telling people about you. Each has a tool, and each has a limitation worth knowing before you rely on it.
Scaling a small photo up normally looks soft, because interpolation spreads existing pixels over a bigger canvas without adding information. The Image Upscaler offers two routes out of that.
Be clear about what AI upscaling is, though: it is plausible reconstruction, not recovery. The model produces what a sharper version of that image would likely look like. For photos and artwork that is exactly what you want. For anything evidential — reading a plate number, verifying a document — treat the output as invented.
One practical note: AI mode downscales very large inputs to around 1024px before processing to stay within GPU limits, so feeding it an enormous file gains nothing. Big photos needing modest enlargement are better served by Standard.
A normal crop takes the centre of the frame, which is fine until the subject is not centred. Centre-cropping a portrait of someone standing to one side removes their head — a problem that multiplies when you are processing a batch and cannot check each one.
Smart Crop analyses the image to find the visually important region and frames around that instead. It earns its keep on product feeds, blog thumbnails and social previews, where the same photo has to work as a square avatar, a wide banner and a tall story.
It is not infallible. Images with several competing subjects, or where the meaningful part is small and low-contrast, can be framed wrongly. For a hero image, check the result — automatic cropping handles volume, it does not replace judgement.
Before any of those images go public, it is worth knowing what is embedded in them. The EXIF Viewer shows the metadata your camera wrote into the file.
Typically that means the camera or phone model, lens, shutter speed, aperture and ISO, the exact date and time, and often GPS coordinates precise enough to identify a building. Edited files can also carry the software used and occasionally the full file path from the original computer.
The GPS data is the part that matters most. A photo posted from home can reveal your address to anyone who inspects the file — which has real implications for pictures of children, for selling items online, and for anyone with a reason not to broadcast their location.
