Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC — a newer format that stores the same image in roughly half the space of a JPG. Apple devices handle it natively, but Windows, older Android phones and most websites do not, which is why the file looks broken or refuses to open. Converting to JPG makes it universally readable.
There is a small quality cost because JPG is a lossy format, but at our default settings the difference is invisible at normal viewing sizes. We decode the original HEIC at full resolution and encode with a high-quality JPG setting, so you keep the detail that matters. The JPG will usually be larger on disk than the HEIC.
On your iPhone open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG instead of HEIC. Existing photos stay in HEIC, so you will still need to convert those. Keeping High Efficiency saves storage space, which is why Apple makes it the default.
