JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, SVG — every image format exists for a reason, and picking the right one (or converting to it) affects file size, quality, and where the image will even open. An iPhone HEIC won't display on Windows; a huge PNG photo wastes bandwidth; WebP shrinks files but old software chokes on it. Know your formats

• JPG — small, lossy; best for photos where tiny quality loss is fine.
• PNG — lossless with transparency; best for logos, screenshots, and graphics.
• WebP — modern, ~30% smaller than JPG/PNG at the same quality; best for the web.
• HEIC — Apple's efficient photo format; needs converting to open outside Apple devices.
• SVG — vector (infinitely scalable); rasterise to PNG when a tool needs pixels.

Tips

• WebP for the web, JPG/PNG for compatibility. Serve WebP to modern browsers for speed; keep a JPG/PNG fallback for anything old.
• Don't convert JPG → PNG to “improve” quality. PNG can't restore detail JPG already discarded — it just makes a bigger file.
• Compress after converting. Finish web images with the Image Compressor.
