They are semantic roles rather than just the most common colours. Vibrant is the boldest saturated tone, good for accents and buttons. Muted is subdued and works for backgrounds. The Dark and Light versions of each give you options with enough contrast for text against them.
Pick one dominant colour to lead, one contrasting accent, and neutrals from the muted tones for backgrounds and body text. Resist using all six — extracted palettes are a starting point, and designs that use every colour from a photo tend to look busy rather than cohesive.
Not automatically. Extracted colours reflect the image, not contrast requirements, so a vibrant mid-tone can easily fail WCAG against white. Run any pairing you plan to use for text through our Contrast Checker before committing — the dark and light variants are usually the ones that pass.
