No — they are plausible, not researched. The model infers likely colours from context: skin tones, sky, foliage and common materials come out convincingly. Clothing, painted objects and anything arbitrary is a guess. A uniform or a specific dress could easily be rendered the wrong colour, so treat results as interpretation.
Clear scans with good tonal range and recognisable subjects — portraits, landscapes, street scenes. Very dark, faded or heavily damaged originals give the model little to work with. Scanning at higher resolution and correcting brightness and contrast first noticeably improves the result.
Yes, when it needs it. Colorization interprets what it sees, so scratches, dust and creases can be misread and coloured as if they were part of the scene. Cleaning up damage and improving contrast first gives the model a clearer picture and produces markedly better colour.
Yes, AI Photo Colorizer is completely free. No signup, no account, and no watermark on outputs. A Pro tier is available for 100 AI ops/day and larger file sizes.
AI Photo Colorizer sends your file to our AI provider over an encrypted connection so the model can process it. It is deleted after processing and is not used to train models. If a file is confidential, use one of our in-browser tools instead, which never upload anything.

This tool uses a state-of-the-art AI image colorization model. It uses a dual-decoder architecture: an encoder extracts rich visual features, while two decoders work in parallel — one captures global color semantics and the other refines local color details — achieving photo-realistic colorization on diverse scenes.
How it works: The model converts your image to LAB color space, isolates the luminance (L) channel, passes it through the neural network to predict the A and B color channels, then reconstructs the final colorized image. This preserves the original brightness while applying AI-predicted colors.
Best use cases: Old family portraits, historic black & white photographs, newspaper clippings, film stills, war-era images, vintage street photography, and any black & white image you want to see in color.
Color mood presets: After colorization, choose from 5 presets — Natural (faithful reproduction), Vivid (punchy colors), Cinematic (muted, warm filmic look), Vintage (desaturated with a warm sepia tint), and Cool (slight blue shift for a modern editorial feel). All adjustments are live-previewed and baked into the downloaded PNG.
Privacy: Images are sent to a private, secure GPU server for processing and are never stored, logged, or shared. Each request is processed on demand and discarded immediately after delivery.
Supported input formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP · Max input: 10 MB · Output: PNG · GPU: NVIDIA T4 · Powered by secure serverless GPU infrastructure
