It reconstructs facial detail — eyes, skin texture, hair edges — in photos that are soft, low-resolution or degraded. It is trained specifically on faces, which is why it outperforms general sharpening on portraits, and why it does comparatively little for landscapes or objects.
Usually, but check carefully. The model reconstructs plausible detail rather than recovering what was truly there, so very blurry faces can come back subtly altered — a slightly different nose or jawline. The worse the input, the more the output is interpretation rather than restoration.
It is one of the best uses for it. Faded, soft prints from decades ago often improve markedly. Scan at the highest resolution your scanner offers and repair heavy damage first if you can — the model handles softness far better than it handles tears, creases and missing areas.

This tool uses a state-of-the-art blind face restoration AI model. It combines a degradation-removal network with a pre-trained face GAN to realistically restore blurry, noisy, and low-resolution portrait photos with remarkable fidelity.
How it works: The model uses facial geometry priors to guide a face super-resolution GAN. It detects facial landmarks, aligns and crops the face region, restores it using the pre-trained generator, then seamlessly pastes the enhanced face back into the original image — preserving background context while maximising face quality.
