Not quite. Naive desaturation averages the channels, which flattens tones and can turn a vivid red and a mid green into the same grey. Proper grayscale conversion weights the channels for human perception — green contributes most, blue least — preserving the contrast your eye expects between colours.
Often yes, particularly for PNG, where storing one channel instead of three can cut size substantially. JPG savings are more modest because its compression already treats colour and brightness separately, devoting most of the data to luminance — which is exactly what survives grayscale conversion.
When you want attention on form, texture and light rather than colour — portraits, architecture, documentary work. It is also practical: unifying mismatched photos into a consistent set, preparing images for single-colour printing, or avoiding a clash with a strong brand palette.
Yes, Grayscale / Black & White is completely free. No signup, no account, and no watermark on outputs. A Pro tier is available for 100 AI ops/day and larger file sizes.
Grayscale / Black & White uploads your file over an encrypted connection to our own processing server, converts it, and returns the result. The file is deleted immediately after processing and is never used for anything else. It is not sent to any third party, and we keep no copies.

What it does: Removes all colour while preserving detail and contrast — proper luminance-weighted grayscale, not a flat desaturation.
Quality & privacy: Rendered on our sharp/libvips engine and deleted immediately — never stored.
