It rearranges pages so they land in the right place once the stack is folded. On a folded eight-page booklet, the outer sheet carries pages 8 and 1 on one side and 2 and 7 on the other. Printing pages in normal order and folding them produces nonsense — imposition is what makes the fold work.
Double-sided, flipping on the short edge, with scaling turned off. Short-edge flip is the usual mistake: long-edge binding leaves alternate sheets upside down. If your printer has no duplex mode, print the odd sheets, flip the whole stack, then feed it back for the even ones.
