It maps an image’s tonal range onto a colour rather than grey, so the photo takes on a single hue. Designers use it to force wildly different photos into one visual language — a set of mismatched stock images tinted to a brand colour suddenly looks like a deliberate, cohesive set.
Your brand colour is the obvious starting point. Mid-tones and slightly desaturated hues generally look better than pure saturated ones, which can overwhelm the image. Very light tints wash the photo out; very dark ones lose the subject entirely, so aim for something with room at both ends.
Often better than over the original, since tinting flattens the tonal variation that makes text hard to place. A darker tint under white text is a reliable combination — but check the actual contrast ratio rather than trusting your eye, particularly where the image is bright.
