Less than you would expect if you assemble carefully. Trim along one edge of each sheet and overlap rather than butting the pieces together, and work outward from the centre tile. Designs with large flat areas hide seams well; fine detail or gradients across a join are the hardest cases.
Enough that the source still looks sharp once enlarged several times over. Vector PDFs are ideal, since they scale without any loss. A low-resolution image blown up across nine sheets will be visibly soft — the tiling cannot add detail that was not there to begin with.
